Amanda Lauren for Everything Branding

Want to know how to get press for your product? Amanda Lauren, writer for Real Simple, Forbes, Yahoo Life and more shares her advice! From Amanda:
A lot of people think marketing is PR—and that because you’re paying for Google, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok ads, you’re going to sell a lot of products. But that simply isn’t true.
There’s nothing like getting featured in the media to truly change the game. Whether it’s a full-on feature, a product review, or even being part of a roundup—earned media can take your product from being something a few insiders know about to be a household name overnight.
Here are a few points to consider.
Press Releases Are Generally a Waste of Time
Unless your news involves someone famous, no one cares about your press release. Unless you’ve got something truly major going on—like a blockbuster film or, say, you’re the President—press releases are a waste of money.
Writers in the lifestyle space are very busy, and reading press releases is time-consuming. Consumers don’t read them either. There are so many better uses of time and resources.
Offering Your Expertise Is a Fantastic Way to Get Your Product Out There
Whether you make lip balm or vacuums, there are lots of press opportunities for those willing to offer their expertise. I’m constantly baffled by how many brands drop the ball on this.
You can even outsource your expertise. For example, if you make mascara, work with a makeup artist who can be your spokesperson. Do you make a cleaning product? Find a cleaning content creator to partner with. You can also do this yourself, but I think spokespeople truly take it to the next level.
Make Sure Your Product Is Sold On A Major Affiliate Platform
Getting a review or inclusion in a roundup requires offering an affiliate commission. I know this isn’t ideal, but publishers require it (don’t shoot the messenger). So, make sure you sign up for one or that your product is sold on a site that is. Most major websites have affiliate programs, whether it’s Amazon, Nordstrom, or Walmart.
